Hey everyone,
As a business owner, if someone tries to make a claim against you it can be a very stressful time, regardless of the situation. Public Liability Insurance is a requirement for all Checkatrade members to help protect you if you were to experience such a situation.
We have teamed up with Covéa Insurance, to offer Checkatrade members a specialist insurance product which includes Public Liability cover, who have a few examples to share of where public liability insurance has benefited the trader:
Fall results in injury claim:
Our Policyholder had been working in the street and left a manhole open and unguarded for a short time whilst they nipped away to get more tools. Unfortunately at this time, a partially-sighted elderly man fell into the manhole and suffered injuries which caused mobility problems. He was the carer for his wife and it was considered they could both end up in residential care, as a result of this accident. Covéa Insurance were able to negotiate a settlement of this claim for £87,500 which was fully covered as part of the policy. Additionally the Policyholder & employees were interviewed by the HSE under caution but after a robust statement they decided not to prosecute.
A costly simple error:
The insured was a plumber & heating engineer who had fitted a push fit stop end on the cold water mains pipe on an upstairs en-suite, turned the water back on and tested the fit before leaving. Within 48 hours the fitting had blown and flooded the premises downstairs. Covéa Insurance had the part examined by a forensic engineer who found that the leak occurred because the copper pipe was not inserted fully into the socket of the fitting, suggesting installation error. This simple error resulted in a claim costing £63,000 which was fully covered under their policy.
If you need to make a claim with Covéa Insurance, they will do their utmost to support you to make the process as smooth and easy as possible for you.
