Question: I need several layers of old paint stripping off my 1930's staircase. I assume chemicals would be used. I have asthma so would be concerned about this. Anyone got any ideas as to what could be used?

Painter and decorator is your best option or you could find some who restores old furniture but i would look for a painter and decorator and ask to see pictures of work they have done. -

Level 418-05-21 08:22Goodmorning. For start if that staircase have original paint on it then is most likely to be full of harmful particle. I advise to check first what chemicals won't go in reaction. Bearing in mind you have asthma this job maybe just to dangerous for you to do yourself. All areas need be sealed off completely making sure you have that well went. As for paint you can used 2 types. Watter base or oil base bearing that on both timber need be properly prime before painting. Crown trade in my opinion is one of best timber paints.

the type of trade you should be using is a painter or a painter & decorator (the latter is a more skilled crafts person)
paint remover (safe paint stripper)

As the stripping would be done with a jell like material there is no dust created.

Level 1913-09-21 08:26What I would suggest is along what Wayne has said if you have asthma which I do I understand what triggers can be simple find a genuine tradesmen or trades women and either stay at mums for a week have it done while on holiday or stay in a hotel after primer use water based system less fumes
