If you’ve seen the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall, you’re bound to remember how it ended. In an iconic moment for 007 fans, the closing scenes featured a reveal of his childhood home, the magnificent Skyfall Lodge.
Unfortunately, Bond’s ancestral home in the Scottish Highlands came to a messy end. After a standoff between Daniel Craig’s 007 and arch-enemy Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem), the stone-built lodge was almost completely destroyed.
Here, we’ll take a hypothetical look at what it would cost to repair Skyfall House.
How was Skyfall Lodge damaged?
A better question would be ‘how wasn’t the house damaged?’. In the film, Skyfall Lodge is battered by a series of catastrophic events.
The walls and windows sustain heavy damage from helicopter fire. This is followed by gunfire from Silva and his henchmen. Next, grenades tossed through the windows cause intense fires, before Bond himself triggers a huge explosion with a homemade gas canister bomb.
As if all that wasn’t enough, the bomb explosion damages the helicopter. This then crashes into the house and explodes in an enormous fireball. There’s pretty much nothing left by the end of the film.
Cost to repair Skyfall House:
As Skyfall Lodge was so badly damaged in the film, in reality, it probably wouldn’t be worth repairing. Nothing but perhaps the foundations could be saved. The house would most likely need to be rebuilt from scratch.
But how much roughly would this cost? As the house you see in the film is a set, we’d need to use a similar property as our example.
Dalness House is a similar style lodge, in nearly the same spot in the Scottish Highlands. Making some assumptions about the size, style and materials for both properties, we can estimate that rebuilding a house like Skyfall Lodge could cost around £1.8 million. This excludes certain finishes.
Remember though that the rebuilding cost varies hugely depending on location. For example, it would be more expensive to build in a remote location such as the Scottish Highlands due to haulage costs.
Cost of replacing interiors
In the film, we don’t see a lot of the interiors of Skyfall Lodge before it’s shot, burnt and blown up. But from what we can see, there are many distinctive and impressive features.
Once you’d gone to the trouble of rebuilding the house from scratch, you’d need to replace the dark oak wood floors at around £65 a square metre.
Other essentials to recreate the Skyfall Lodge interiors include traditional wood panelling at between £79 and £250 a panel. You’d also need a wood staircase at around £8,250. A wood staircase would be cheaper in other properties, but not in a grand place like the Skyfall house.
