We have had to have a section of plasterboard removed to expose a leaky pipe (pipe was fixed), but our question is, can a small section of plasterboard be reinstated behind a kitchen base unit & then skimmed, without needing to remove the kitchen unit & its associated worktop ? We think that the base unit would need to be removed along with the kitchen worktop, to safely access the plasterboard behind the unit, as the reinstatement area is also behind existing pipework. If so would this then require a new kitchen base unit & worktop? Sorry if the question seems silly but we're not kitchen experts & we don't know if the base unit can easily slide out and go back in. Thank you for any advice....
Thanks @Fab Fabian for your response - is it as simple as that? @Thistle1908 - thanks for your question. Reading through it I imagine adding photos may help our trades understand your tricky situation better - is there any way you could upload one or two please?
Hi there
Thank you for your message & I'm uploading a pic that shows the cavity concerned at the back of the double base sink unit. I hope this helps..
@Thistle1908
looking at your images i would recommend that rather than, repairing the plaster board & skimming- i would use this an access point.
so using suitable pre finished laminate board an access panel is created.
with caps & screws to make it look neat
Hi @Thistle1908 The unit wouldn't slide out without removing the sink because the bowls would obstruct it! So why over complicate things, just keep it simple. It looks like all you need to do is box/panel inside the unit to make the offending area tidy and presentable. But I wouldn't screw it in place as this may hinder emergency access to the tap isolation valves etc. Personally I would permanently cover/panel the exposed area behind the vertical waste pipe, leaving the area above it open, as this will be out of the line of sight but more importantly always accessible in emergency!
@ChelseaDave
Thank you so much for your reply, this is very helpful info too. The good news is that we're now having a kitchen re-fit, so should be able to fix this small area when the unit is removed prior to replacing it again. Thank you so much ....
Hey @Thistle1908 I'm really pleased to hear that the experts advice is super helpful for you!
You mentioned that you're having a kitchen re-fit, very exciting 🤩, have you found a tradesperson to complete the work for you yet? If so, did you find them through Checkatrade? 😊
